Common Nase
Chondrostoma nasus
Chondrostoma nasus, commonly known as the common nase, is a freshwater fish native to European rivers, especially those with moderate to fast currents. It is recognized by its elongated body and distinctive inferior mouth adapted for scraping food from stones. Its diet mainly consists of algae, periphyton, and small aquatic organisms. The species is typically found in schools in well-oxygenated rivers with gravel or rocky bottoms. The common nase can grow up to 40β50 cm in length. It has a silvery body with a darker back and lighter underside. It plays an important role in river ecosystems by controlling algae growth and serving as prey for larger predatory fish.
