Demoiselle
Calopteryx spp.
The demoiselle is a genus of damselflies from the family Calopterygidae, distinguished by their long, slender bodies and broad, colorful wings often exhibiting a metallic sheen. In Poland, the most commonly encountered species is the beautiful demoiselle (Calopteryx virgo), with males displaying dark blue to nearly black wings, while females have greenish wings. These damselflies inhabit clean, slow-flowing rivers and streams with abundant riparian vegetation, where they lay eggs and hunt small insects. Their flight is slow and fluttering, making them easily recognizable in the wild. Demoiselles play an important ecological role by controlling insect populations.
