European Greyling
Thymallus thymallus
The European grayling (Thymallus thymallus) is a freshwater fish belonging to the salmon family. It inhabits clear, cold, and well-oxygenated rivers and streams, typically in mountainous and submontane regions of Europe. The species prefers gravelly bottoms and moderate to fast currents. Grayling feed mainly on aquatic insects, larvae, crustaceans, and occasionally small fish. They are known for their sensitivity to pollution and environmental changes, which makes them an indicator species of high water quality. The European grayling is easily recognized by its large, sail-like dorsal fin decorated with colorful patterns, as well as its slender, silvery body. It is highly valued in recreational fishing due to its cautious behavior and fighting ability, and it holds an important place in river ecosystems.
