Gudgeon
Gobio gobio
The gudgeon (Gobio gobio) is a small freshwater fish widely distributed across Europe. It primarily inhabits clear rivers, streams, and lakes with sandy or gravelly bottoms and moderate current. The species prefers well-oxygenated waters and is often found in shallow areas. Gudgeon are bottom-feeding fish that search for food along the substrate. Their diet consists mainly of insect larvae, small invertebrates, and organic matter found in the sediment. A distinctive feature of the species is the pair of small barbels located at the corners of the mouth, which help detect food on the bottom. The gudgeon has an elongated body with a light coloration and darker spots along the sides, providing camouflage against the riverbed. Although small in size, it plays an important role in freshwater ecosystems as both a predator of invertebrates and prey for larger fish species.
