European Crayfish
Astacus astacus
The European Crayfish (Astacus astacus) is a freshwater crustacean native to Europe, commonly found in clean, cool rivers and lakes. It features a hard exoskeleton ranging from greenish to brown in color and large pincers used for defense and food capture. Adult individuals typically reach lengths of 10 to 16 cm. This species plays an important ecological role by maintaining biological balance in aquatic environments, acting both as a predator and scavenger. The European Crayfish also has economic value but faces threats from diseases and the introduction of invasive crayfish species. Conservation efforts focus on preserving natural habitats, disease control, and limiting competition from non-native species. In Poland, the European Crayfish is partially protected to prevent population decline and support freshwater biodiversity.
