Silver bream
Blicca bjoerkna
The silver bream (Blicca bjoerkna) is a medium-sized freshwater fish widely distributed across Europe. It inhabits lakes, reservoirs, and slow-flowing rivers, preferring calm waters with soft, muddy bottoms and abundant vegetation. This species is a schooling fish, often forming large groups, especially outside the spawning season. Silver bream feed mainly on insect larvae, small invertebrates, mollusks, and organic matter found in bottom sediments. The fish has a laterally compressed body with bright silvery coloration and slightly reddish fins, particularly in younger individuals. It is often confused with the common bream, but it is generally smaller and has proportionally larger eyes. The silver bream plays an important ecological role and is commonly encountered in recreational fishing.
