Sunbleak

Leucaspius delineatus

The sunbleak (Leucaspius delineatus) is a small freshwater fish widely distributed across Europe. It inhabits ponds, lakes, oxbow waters, and slow-flowing rivers, preferring shallow, warm areas rich in aquatic vegetation. The species typically forms small schools near the surface. Sunbleak feed mainly on plankton, tiny invertebrates, and insect larvae collected from the water column. Due to their small size and schooling behavior, they serve as prey for many larger predatory fish. The species is characterized by a slender, elongated body with bright silvery coloration and a distinct lateral line. Despite its modest size, the sunbleak plays an important ecological role in freshwater ecosystems, contributing to the balance of aquatic food webs.
